‘Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD’ gets a second season, ‘Agent Carter’ coming to ABC | The Verge.

I’m so excited that ABC has picked up “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” for another season, I have to admit that in the pit of my stomach I feared the curse of Whedon would strike and we’d be left with nothing but cliff hangers and unfinished plots or worse yet, hastily wrapped up stories that make everyone go “What The!!!??”

Agent Carter - Marvel's Agents of Shield - Captain America

I’m also excited to see the rumors were true about them releasing a “Prequel-ish” series with “Agent Carter”, which I’m assuming will fill in the blanks for the non-comic bookers and clear up some facts for the already initiated, about the origins of the greatest anti-terrorism group fictional America has ever known, S.H.I.E.L.D.

I’ve already seen the trolls out there poo-pooing the show because “it’s a superhero show with a female lead” but that’s not exactly accurate.  This is going to be a show about a single woman in post WWII America, who has just lost the love of her life and has to figure out the changing world around her…with some action, drama, and probably the very occasional run in with a “super hero” or possibly even alien force.  My guess is that the story will be more like a political drama showing the birth of S.H.I.E.L.D., but the real attraction will be watching the growth of our lead heroine into a strong, capable, confident woman…with some humor and poking fun at antiquated ideas about life and the sexes from the 1940’s to present day.

To me, this show is just another example of the great strides production companies are making in regards to truly embracing comic book stories.  In the past Hollywood has been notorious for mishandling characters, back stories, team-ups…well the list goes on and on…but recently having apparently exhausted all other originality in script making, it seems someone finally realized the wealth that comic books could provide production companies everywhere.

In another article I read, that there are over 80,000 characters that Marvel owns the rights to, each one of those characters has a story and those stories stretch across all kinds of genres, action, drama, thriller, horror, sci-fi, wild west, fantasy, political drama, and I’m just scratching the surface.  Now the great thing is all the characters and their stories are in roughly the same “universe” which means they can interact, have already been vetted for continuity, story boarded, and have existing dialogue. Hollywood, basically just has to do some minor cleanup and dialogue moderization and boom…TV or movie script.  The less they mess with it the better, and they finally seem to have learned that valuable lesson.

Though the main character in Agent Carter may be female (not that there’s anything wrong with that), I don’t believe this is going to have the same feel as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., The Avengers, or Captain America, I’d be very surprised if it had anywhere near the same special effects budget of “Agents”, but I do believe it’s going to have strong writing, great casting, and some great cross-series and movie tie-ins…mostly because that’s what I want to believe, but I’ll stick to my guns until I’m proven wrong.

Hooray and Hoorah, true believers!!!!
